Where’s the proof? This is a common question we get and it’s easy to see why. We have been flooded with reports telling us how safe mobile phones are for years now, and heres one crazy company telling us we’re all wrong. So lets put out in the open exactly what the scientific evidence is. We will only be talking here about published, peer reviewed studies into the dangers of electromagnetic radiation.
Let’s start with the big one, the largest study done into the potential health hazards from exposure to Radio Frequencies used by mobile phones. This study looked at 2G and 3G frequencies in the range of 700-2700 MHz range. It was carried out by the United States National Toxicology Program (NTP) over the course of 10 years and at a cost of millions of dollars.

There are many factors that influence whether damaged DNA will lead to tumors. NTP plans to conduct additional studies to learn more about how RFR might cause DNA damage.

This study looked at RF in the range 700-2700 MHz, 5G will be using frequencies in the 60,000 MHz range!
Exposure to extremely low-frequency magnetic fields (ELF-MF) was evaluated in an International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) Monographs as “possibly carcinogenic to humans” in 2001, based on increased childhood leukemia risk observed in epidemiological studies. Up to 2% of childhood leukemias in Europe, as previously estimated, may be attributable to ELF-MF. Read more here.
The aim of this study was evaluation of the late effects of a 100 Hz electromagnetic field, applied continuously or discontinuously, on the DNA integrity of Vero (a monkey cell commonly used in microbiology) cells. Normal Vero cells were exposed to extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields (100 Hz, 5.6 mT) for 45 minutes.

This paper is a pooled analysis of two studies on malignant brain tumours. The studies found that mobile phone use increased the risk of glioma by 1.3x overall and increased to 3.0x in the >25 year latency group.
The OR (Odds Ratio) increased statistically significantly per 100 hours of cumulative use of both mobile and cordless phones. First use of mobile or cordless phone before the age of 20 gave higher OR for glioma than in later age groups.

This study looked at whether maternal exposure to high levels of magnetic fields (MFs) during pregnancy is associated with the risk of asthma in offspring. The study said the following: Our findings provide new epidemiological evidence that high maternal MF levels in pregnancy may increase the risk of asthma in offspring.
Every 1-mG increase of maternal MF level during pregnancy was associated with a 15% increased rate of asthma in offspring. Compared with the children whose mothers had a low MF level (median 24-hour MF level, ≤0.3 mG) during pregnancy, children whose mothers had a high MF level (>2.0 mG) had more than a 3.5-fold increased rate of asthma, while children whose mothers had a medium MF level (>0.3-2.0 mG) had a 74% increased rate of asthma.

MicroRNAs (miRNA) play a paramount role in growth, differentiation, proliferation and cell death by suppressing one or more target genes. However, their interaction with radio frequencies is still unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the long-term effects of radiofrequency radiation emitted from a Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) system on some of the miRNA in brain tissue.
The conclusion of the paper was as follows: Long-term exposure of 2.4 GHz RF may lead to adverse effects such as neurodegenerative diseases originated from the alteration of some miRNA expression and more studies should be devoted to the effects of RF radiation on miRNA expression levels.

This article identifies adverse effects of non-ionizing non-visible radiation reported in the premier biomedical literature. It emphasizes that most of the laboratory experiments conducted to date are not designed to identify the more severe adverse effects reflective of the real-life operating environment in which wireless radiation systems operate. Many experiments do not include pulsing and modulation of the carrier signal. The vast majority do not account for synergistic adverse effects of other toxic stimuli (such as chemical and biological) acting in concert with the wireless radiation. This article also presents evidence that the nascent 5G mobile networking technology will affect not only the skin and eyes, as commonly believed, but will have adverse systemic effects as well.
In an mass appeal to the European Union, more than 180 scientists and doctors have warned about the danger of 5G, which will lead to a massive increase in involuntary exposure to electromagnetic radiation. They are appealing to the EU to delay the 5G rollout until it can be properly studied by independent scientists.
We, the undersigned scientists, recommend a moratorium on the roll-out of the fifth generation, 5G, for telecommunication until potential hazards for human health and the environment have been fully investigated by scientists independent from industry. 5G will substantially increase exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) on top of the 2G, 3G, 4G, WiFi etc. for telecommunications already in place. RF-EMF has been proven to be harmful for humans and the environment.

A section of the scientific community considers that more research on the potential negative biological effects of electromagnetic fields (EMF) and 5G is needed, notably on the incidence of some serious human diseases. A further consideration is the need to bring together researchers from different disciplines, in particular medicine and physics or engineering, to conduct further research into the effects of 5G. The EU’s current provisions on exposure to wireless signals, the Council Recommendation on the limitation of exposure of the general public to electromagnetic fields (0 Hz to 300 GHz), is now 20 years old, and thus does not take the specific technical characteristics of 5G into account.

This blog post on Scientific American goes into detail on how our guidelines for EMF safety are based mainly of research from the 1980’s. Since these limits were adopted over 500 studies have found harmful biologic or health effects from exposure to RFR.
The latest cellular technology, 5G, will employ millimeter waves for the first time in addition to microwaves that have been in use for older cellular technologies, 2G through 4G. Given limited reach, 5G will require cell antennas every 100 to 200 meters, exposing many people to millimeter wave radiation. 5G also employs new technologies (e.g., active antennas capable of beam-forming; phased arrays; massive multiple inputs and outputs, known as massive MIMO) which pose unique challenges for measuring exposures.
Millimeter waves are mostly absorbed within a few millimeters of human skin and in the surface layers of the cornea. Short-term exposure can have adverse physiological effects in the peripheral nervous system, the immune system and the cardiovascular system. The research suggests that long-term exposure may pose health risks to the skin (e.g., melanoma), the eyes (e.g., ocular melanoma) and the testes (e.g., sterility).
Since 5G is a new technology, there is no research on health effects, so we are “flying blind” to quote a U.S. senator. However, we have considerable evidence about the harmful effects of 2G and 3G. Little is known the effects of exposure to 4G, a 10-year-old technology, because governments have been remiss in funding this research. Meanwhile, we are seeing increases in certain types of head and neck tumors in tumor registries, which may be at least partially attributable to the proliferation of cell phone radiation. These increases are consistent with results from case-control studies of tumor risk in heavy cell phone users.
