An EMF (electromagnetic field) meter — also called an EMF reader or EMF detector — helps you measure the microwave radiation and electromagnetic fields in your surroundings. Because buying the right one can be difficult, especially for first-time buyers, we’ve put together a full buyer’s guide further down this page.

Please note: we do not accept returns for monitors
There are plenty of EMF monitors, detectors, and radiation meters available to buy — the right one depends on what you’re trying to measure.
Some electromagnetic field meters are built for low-frequency (LF) fields — like those from household wiring, appliances, and power lines. Others are built for high-frequency (HF) fields — like phone masts, WiFi, and 5G. A few, like the TriField® TF2, measure both in one device. Check the frequency range of any meter before buying, or get in touch and we’ll help you pick the right one for your situation.
| Meter | Measures | Range | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cemprotec 31 | HF only | 1MHz–10GHz | WiFi, cell towers, Bluetooth — RF-only spot checks |
| Cemprotec 32 | LF only + dirty electricity | 10Hz–5kHz (LF), 1.6MHz–68MHz (DE) | Wiring, appliances, dirty electricity — no RF |
| Cemprotec 33 | HF + LF combined | HF 1MHz–8GHz, LF 10Hz–5kHz | General all-round home testing |
| Cemprotec 34 | HF + LF combined | HF 1MHz–10GHz, LF 10Hz–5kHz | Same as 33, wider HF ceiling |
| TriField® TF2 | HF + LF (Magnetic + Electric) | RF 20MHz–6GHz | All-in-one, with rated accuracy figures |
| FM5 Path 5G Monitor | HF only, including mmWave | Up to 32GHz | Cell tower and 5G mmWave detection specifically |
| Dirty Electricity Line EMI Monitor | Dirty electricity only | 10kHz–10MHz | Plug-in wiring noise — not a general EMF meter |
Generally speaking, more expensive meters give more accurate, three-dimensional readings and are better suited to people using them regularly. If you only need occasional spot-checks, a simpler single-purpose device — like the Cemprotec 31 for RF, or the Cemprotec 32 for wiring and dirty electricity — may be all you need. If you want one device that covers everything, the Cemprotec 34 or TriField TF2 are the better fit.
Nothing — they’re different names for the same type of device. We use all three terms interchangeably on this site.
Not always. Some meters are built for low-frequency (LF) fields, others for high-frequency (HF) fields — check the spec of each meter before buying, or get in touch and we’ll help.
Most standard meters detect sub-6GHz frequencies, which covers most residential 5G. Detecting mmWave 5G (above 6GHz) needs a meter built specifically for it, like our FM5 Path 5G Monitor.
An RF (radio frequency) monitor measures high-frequency EMF specifically — things like WiFi, mobile signals, and mast radiation — rather than the full range an EMF meter can cover, which often includes low-frequency electric and magnetic fields too. If you only need to monitor RF exposure personally and continuously, a wearable RF safety monitor may suit you better than a handheld meter.
